1.HSBC Pushes Back Net Zero Goals by 20 Years

HSBC announced major revisions to its climate commitments, pushing back its net zero target for operations and supply chain from 2030 to 2050, citing slow progress in climate technology, energy transition, and government policies. The bank is also reviewing its interim financed emissions reduction targets for carbon-intensive sectors, acknowledging that global decarbonization efforts have lagged behind expectations. HSBC noted that while it remains committed to net zero, external factors such as technological advancements and regulatory frameworks are impacting its ability to meet its 2030 goals. Despite this delay, HSBC has facilitated $394 billion in sustainable finance since 2020, moving towards its $750 billion to $1 trillion target by 2030.

2.IKEA Parent Company Releases Net Zero Transition Plan

Ingka Group, the parent company of IKEA, has unveiled its Net Zero Transition Plan, outlining strategies to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% across its value chain by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. The plan details decarbonization actions for key emissions categories, including store operations, construction materials, mobility, and investments. Materials, particularly those used in products and packaging, account for 45% of Ingka’s emissions footprint, with reduction efforts focused on increasing recycled content, improving efficiency, and adopting lower-carbon materials. Other initiatives include phasing out fossil fuels, using 100% renewable energy by 2030, expanding plant-based food options, and transitioning to zero-emission home deliveries. The plan also emphasizes stakeholder engagement and policy advocacy to drive systemic change.

3.EU Lawmakers Agree to New Rules Requiring Fashion Brands to Pay to Recycle Clothes

The European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement on new waste prevention and reduction measures targeting the textile and food sectors. The agreement mandates that fashion brands pay for the collection and recycling of their products, with fees based on product circularity and sustainability. EU member states will be required to establish Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, expanding existing waste management rules to cover textiles, footwear, and household fabrics. The directive also introduces the EU’s first-ever binding food waste reduction targets, requiring a 10% cut in food processing waste and a 30% reduction in retail and household food waste by 2030. The updated directive now awaits formal approval by the European Parliament and Council.

4.METYCLE Raises $15 Million to Modernize Metal Recycling

Cologne-based startup METYCLE has secured €14.4 million (USD$14.8 million) in Series A funding to expand its digital platform for buying and selling recycled and scrap metal, aiming to improve market efficiency and lower carbon emissions. Recycling metals can cut emissions by up to 95% and costs 10% less than primary metal production, yet the secondary metals market remains inefficient. METYCLE's platform connects global recyclers with scrap metal sellers and integrates AI-powered sorting and digital product tracking to ensure material quality and monitor CO₂ savings. The round was led by sustainability-focused VC firm 2150, with participation from existing investors. METYCLE aims to make global metal recycling more transparent and efficient, advancing the circular economy.
