2.IKEA Expands Program to Support Suppliers’ Switch to 100% Renewable Energy

IKEA has expanded its renewable electricity program to 14 additional countries, including the U.S., to accelerate its supply chain’s transition to 100% renewable energy. This initiative is part of IKEA’s commitment to becoming climate positive by 2030, addressing production-related emissions that account for 7% of its total climate footprint. The company initially launched the program in 2021 in China, India, and Poland, later expanding it to ten more countries in 2023. The latest expansion brings the total number of participating markets to 27, with significant increases in renewable electricity adoption among suppliers. IKEA provides suppliers with local renewable energy solutions, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and bundled framework agreements, to make the transition cost-effective and accessible.

3.TPG Acquires US Solar Developer Altus Power for $2.2 Billion

Alternative asset management firm TPG has agreed to acquire Altus Power, the largest owner of commercial-scale solar in the U.S., in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.2 billion. Founded in 2009, Altus Power operates over 1 GW of solar capacity across 25 states, providing clean electricity to businesses, towns, and homes. The acquisition will be executed through TPG Rise Climate’s newly launched Transition Infrastructure strategy, which focuses on energy transition and sustainable infrastructure investments. Altus Power expects the deal to accelerate its expansion to meet growing demand for renewable power. CEO Gregg Felton emphasized that TPG’s expertise in clean energy and infrastructure development will enhance Altus Power’s ability to serve commercial and community solar clients.

4.Cleantech Startup MacroCycle Raises $6.5 Million to “Upcycle” Plastic Waste into New Products

Circular plastics-focused cleantech startup MacroCycle Technologies has secured $6.5 million in seed funding to commercialize its low-energy and cost-effective plastic upcycling process. Founded in 2023, the company uses chemical processes and non-toxic reagents to restore plastic waste into high-quality virgin-grade material, reducing recycling costs and energy use. MacroCycle’s method requires 80% less energy than fossil-based PET production and 50-75% lower capital expenditure than other recycling technologies. The company plans to recycle PET bottles and polyester textiles for industries such as cosmetics, fashion, and food & beverage, with a pilot plant producing bottles and garments from recycled PET resin. The funding, led by Clean Energy Ventures and Volta Circle, will support a 50% operational expansion and scaling of its pilot plant.

5.EU Invests $439 Million in Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Projects to Decarbonize Transport

The European Commission has announced €422 million in funding for 39 alternative fuel infrastructure projects to accelerate the transition to clean transport. The investments, provided through the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, hydrogen refueling stations, and onshore power in ports, as well as electrification of airports and shipping fuel infrastructure for ammonia and methanol. The initiative aligns with the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates increased EV charging and hydrogen refueling networks. The projects will establish approximately 5,000 new charging points, including 626 megawatt chargers, and support zero-emission transport expansion.

6.Trump Administration Approves Sustainable Aviation Fuel Refinery Loan Amid Spending Review

The U.S. Energy Department has approved a loan guarantee for Calumet to expand Montana Renewables’ sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) refinery in Great Falls, increasing production from 140 million to 315 million gallons annually. The expansion will make the facility one of North America’s largest SAF producers, supplying nearly half of the region’s sustainable jet fuel. The loan was finalized under the Biden administration, but concerns arose that Trump’s administration might revoke it amid budget cuts. While the Energy Department confirmed the approval, it is reviewing all funding to align with Trump’s executive orders. Montana Senator Steve Daines supported the loan, citing alignment with Trump’s "energy dominance" goals, though broader clean energy funding remains under review.
